this is my first post to this site,i am purchasing a 2005 glastron sx 5.0 220 hp volvo-penta from a friend that has passed away 1 1/2 years ago and i know he purchased the boat new in 05 and had it winterized ect. each year and stored in a heated garage each fall..the boat has not been touched since last winterization about 2 yrs ago.. drain plugs are in a bag along with hose clamps which i see where this stuff goes but but since it hasnt been run for so long is there anything i should service?i am considering taking it to the dealer where it was winterized but would like to save the money and do the work myself if possible..sorry to be long winded thanks for any advice,

If it has only sat two years I would think a complete summerization and tune up would be fine to get you out on the lake. Tune up being more new plugs to get rid of the old ones that have sat with fogging oil on them for awhile now. Change all fluids, new impeller, new battery, hopefully stabilizer was used in the gas, maybe siphon it out and refill with fresh, go boating after starting on muffs.

Put drain plugs in, charge battery, add fresh fuel and start it. Fogging oil sitting on plugs doesn't hurt a damn thing, it will burn off.

If me,,,,

- Charge and/or replace the battery.
- Facilitate fresh gas if you feel it necessary at this point.
- Ensure you have oil at the full mark.
- Put all the water/drain plugs in the block/rear manifolds - install the hoses etc.
- Lower the drive and check the drive oil level.
- Pull the spark-plugs, re fog, put the muffs on and turn the hose on, then turn the motor with starter via 10 second rotations - as in crank for 10 seconds and stop, wait about 10 seconds, then crank 10 seconds etc until you get oil pressure. It wont take more than 20 or 30 seconds.
- Turn the key off and kill the water/hose.
- Install old plugs and plug wires.
- Turn the hose back on and crank her up.
- Ensure you have water coming out of the drive/prop area. May not if your VP doesn't have the exhaust belows - if so it will be coming out behind the drive etc. If water isn't coming out with the exhaust within 30 seconds shut her down and check your source.

If all is well let her idle a bit - keep a close eye on the gauges.

I wouldn't worry about changing the drive oil unless its never been done - check and see if they did at winterization etc. Regardless, I would probably change the engine oil, oil filter and fuel filter.

Double check all your work and take her to the water.

Good luck!

I realize fogging oil won't hurt a damn thing, but a fresh set of plugs has never made anything Ive ever owned run worse...

Re: questions about a 5.0 220hp in storage

thanks again to all for the good info,i did find the last service had done pretty much everything mentioned..i did double check all levels, put in drain plugs and recharged the battery..this past weekend i unloaded at a boat ramp and let it warm up then backed away slowly from the trailer and in about 7 feet of water my prop found a rope tied to a full size concrete block on the bottom and pulled it up having to cut it off the prop.thankfully i was at the lowest throttle possible..aside from that the boats great and thanks for the posts....
