I got my carb off today to rebuild it . Because it was leaking gas out of it when I got it running. Found out it has a cork float. I can't get the high speed needle out of the bowl. I loosen the nut and can turn it.Is there something I'm missing or just not pulling hard enough?

My carb kit shows a glass bowl under the carb. The glass bowl is towards the back. Does 1 kit do several different carbs? The kit is from NAPA.

I can't get the motor to tilt I can the lock and it moves so does the spring on the back but the motor won't budge. There is a lock and disengage lever on the front but it doesn't seem to do anything other than lock it .

I don't know how long this motor has sit but I'm thinking it hasn't seen water in a long time. The coils were busted open and came out in pieces but the points looked new. Now I found a cork float in the carb.

Keep in mind this motor was built 20 years before I was born. Thanks in advance.

Cork float is normal. Most new ones are still cork.

One kit does several different models.

Various engines need to be in forward gear in order to tilt. Try it.

(Magneto & Driver Coil Alignment)
(J. Reeves)

To align the coils properly, have the metal vertical portion of the coil yokes aligned with the inside edge of the bevel that exists on the top portion of the aluminum seat upon which the coils sit. This creates the proper distance between the coils and the flywheel magnets. Faulty alignment creats friction and the yokes of the coils heat up, turn blue and expand.

Thousands of parts in my remaining stock. Not able to list them all. Let me know what you need and I'll look it up for you. Visit my eBay auction at:

Re: questions about a 5.5 evinrude

The high and low speed needles screw in....remove the nut, then unscrew the needles. Replace the cork float with a plastic one as several here have indicated that the cork ones can't hold up to the newer fuels on the market. As for tilt, my 61' 5.5 only has friction tilt....you can tighten a nut and maybe it will hold. it should just swing up. Best to just put it on a lower mount for ease of working on it. The older carbs in the 50's had the bowl on the carb, mine does not but the kits (Sierra) show the picture of the older ones. Guess there are more of those out there....the coils are easy to find, Iboats should have them. The needle valve for the float can be tricky as the new kits have a clip to connect the float with the valve needle, and sometimes that is hard or impossible. If your old one is OK you can just reuse that. be sure to test it though.
