I have what i am told is a 1963 6 hp johnson(I could check the serial# later to make sure.) I havn't used it in years because it only seems to run well at WOT, and my electric was much more dependable for my 12 foot aluminum. I bought the 6 hp in to be serviced years ago, and was told one of the coils were weak. I recently bought a 16 foot boat with a 70 hp evinrude. I would like to use the 6 hp as a kicker for my new boat, but first need to replace one of the coils. My father knows where I can get another 6hp johnson for next to nothing because the carb is shot. He believes this motor was made around the mid 70's. What I need to know is what years would the coils be interchangebale. My father lives in another town and is planning to visit next week, he could bring the motor with him, but I would hate to buy it if it is no good to me. Thankyou for any help you could give me.

what's the model #? These guys know more than me about this but I believe alot of parts are interchangeable on several motors. That's if they didn't go through a several design changes

Probably compatable sprouticus. But I think I would maybe invest in new coils and point. You need to pop the flywheel off and take a look at the condition of the coils. If the covering is cracked, don't use them. What happens is the spark that's supposed to go to the spark plug wire ends up going to the armature plate where the coils set. The new PN for the coils is 584477....from the John/Rude dealers.

The Sierra PN is 18-5181. You can get them from iboats or any NAPA dealer.

EDIT: Forgive my rudeness.....welcome to iboats!.. :)

thankyou for your replies. I think maybe what I'll do is buy this motor anyway (they only want $35.00, and other than the carb being shot, it is in great shape) Actualy, here is another question, do you think that my carb would fit on this motor???.........my model # is cd-25c and the serial # is c559511. Thanyou once again. It amazes me how people could know so much about outboard motors.

CD-25 is a 1968 engine, sprouticus.

Without the model number of the other engine we can't say with certainty that anything is interchangable, but if it is a CD-XX the chances are good. For $35 it is certainly a steal.

I am always suspicious of "The _____ is shot and needs replacing." diagnoses. That includes carbs and coils. You may end up with two CDs that merely need some careful wrenching to be fully operationsl.

Check out http://www.outboard-boat-motor-repa...on 3 HP 1952-1967 Ignition System Tune-up.htm where I wrote up one of my projects over the winter. This is not the same motor but the magnedo ignition systems on all evinrude/johnson motors were basically the same and used the same parts over many years. OMC basically had a good design and stuck with it. If you do a good tune up on that motor, chances are you will wind up with a jewl and you will have a great sense of pride when you are done. The quality of those old motors is hard to find today. You will need to tune up the ignition system, carb, and put in a new water pump at a total cost of around $100 for the parts. Some of these parts go bad all by themselves just because they are old. I appreciate a good running older motor much more than a new one.

Ok, so just got off the phone with my dad. Turns out the model # for this other motor is 4w72s, and it is in pieces, so once again, what are the chances I can use one to help fix the other???

Re: questions about compatibility with my 6 hp johnson.

just did some research of my own. Turns out the model # he gave me is from a 4 hp made in 1972. He swears the bonnet says it's a 6 hp, maybe no the original bonnet???? Anyway, I suppose New coils might be a better way to go. Thanx for reading.
