I have a 1990 Johnson 200hp that started slipping out of gear. The mechanic where I take it said it's probably the dogs. Had a metalic sounds like something was clunking. Doesn't sound good. He is checking to confirm the problem. One thing that happened is I was checking the fluid for metal after it started slipping and when I removed the top drain plug, there was a lot of pressure and the fluid shot out? I've never had that happen from all the times I've changed the fluid? Is that a sign or normal?
What would cause this or do they just wear? I've been around boat my entire life and know to not slip it in gear and never have. I also changed the fluid just before and it looked great. I put a generic fluid in from West Marine, but that wouldn't cause it, would it? I didn't think it was much different from the OMC, but maybe it is?
Lastly, I found a place called Merc Aftermarket on Ebay that sell a complete lower aftermarket lower unit. Fully assembled for around $1,000. Anyone had any experience on these or recommend against it. Comes with a 3 year warranty and sounds like a large operation with a lot of inventory? Just curious if anyone had any good or bad interaction?
