Questions about Poppet valve routing on v200

Ok everyone, I have been looking at the poppet valve setup on my merc 200 (approx. 79' or 80' model) and have a few questions and suggestions. First I wanted to see if someone could give me the correct routing for the water lines on this engine. When I bought the boat I put in a new impeller w/ housing, t-stats, and lines. Then I found out that this design doesn't give a tell-tail till it is warm enough to open the stats. Didn't like that and drilled a small hole in each stat, enough for a little water. The routing was from the port stat to the starboard stat and then to the poppet valve. The tell-tail came out the bottom port side of the block. Well still couldn't get a reliable tell-tail and today decided to tee of the top line down to the tell-tail and cap the line coming out the side of the block. Great tell tail now.
But have another question. I remember reading on here that eventually they started using a port at the top of the block to the poppet valve instead of the one from the t-stat. Why? Is this a better design. I am thinking of doing this. The reason is that when we were out on the boat today I noticed that it sounds like it is louder than other ones I have been on. most of my run was with the kids on the tube so I was right on the line of opening up the poppet valve. Also I'm guessing that it is normal for the tell-tail port to have exhaust coming out of it if there is no water there right? Seems that if there is no water going that way then exhaust could backflow that way. This motor runs great, and has good compression. I'm sure it has been rebuilt before but the previous owner didn't do it. Main thing for me is to keep this motor running as good as possible. And I want to run a tee from the port in the top of the block to the poppet valve to help eliminate any hot spots in the motor and either run it to the line that goes between the t-stats or to the poppet valve and plug the one from the t-stats. This a good idea or no?
Thanks in advance for any advise. Been on here a while, don't post much but do read a bunch.

I think that it is much better to install a water pressure gauge on the motor than to tinker with the poppets and water line routing. You can keep an eye on the water pressure constantly while you are behind the wheel, which is better than looking back at the pee stream behind the motor from time to time. Just my thoughts.

Oh forgot that, do have a water pressure gauge already. That is what is in the top port.
