Was looking in local classifieds and an 82 Johnson 2hp became available.
The owner is asking $130 obo.

It apparently has new bottom end seals.

However its mentioned that the motor starts then stalls and doesnt reach full RPM's.

What do you more experienced guys think the culprit of the above described symptoms could be?

Thanks in advance as your answers will help me decide whether I want to purchase and do the undertaking, or just walk away...

I once borrowed one like that, an early ‘90s model. Does it have a gas tank built in to the motor cover, on top?

I borrowed it for long term use thinking I could clean the carb and I’d be good to go. It had the same symptoms as you describe.

Turned out the owner had put it away years ago with a full tank, which had evaporated. The whole bottom of the tank was varnished. Every time I would clean the carb, it would gunk right back up from the crud in the tank.

There was probably a way to clean the whole system, but I wasn’t willing to go that far for a borrowed motor.

edit: I looked it up. 1990 EJR-ESE was 1.2 hp. It may not be the same as yours.

Worn out? Overheat damage? You pays your money and you takes your chances.

I have pretty much the same motor. It works, but I suggest you look for a 3 or 4 HP Johnson/Evinrude instead. The 2HP is one cylinder, much noisier and and more vibration than the 2 cylinders. Don't be afraid of one from the 60's or 70's, those are great little motors and are still light enough to carry around.

I have to agree, the 3hp motors are great. But if it were me, I'd hold out for a 2hp for a canoe side mount. Heck, if I really was in the market for a canoe motor, I'd be looking for an old Neptune Mighty Mite. 1.7 hp @ 17 pounds. Note, I said "old". Yep, haven't been made for many moons, but popular with collectors. Prowl around the antique outboard club's website www.aomci.org You might even get started in a new hobby. Just my opinion.

At $130 and running it may be a good deal.----Remember that shop time in some areas is $ 100/ hr.----Any one looking for an older motor like that needs to accept the fact that fixing it yourself is a must .---Not hard to do.
