Questions about replacing a leaking core plug

Hi all. I have a core plug that just started spraying around the outside edge. It's right behind the motor mount so I can't get a really good look at it, but i'd say after 42 years it's probably rusted out. This engine has always been properly winterized, at least it has in the last 20 years!

My question is this: I have read in other threads that I need to remove the drive before I can remove the motor mount. Is this only for drives with a gimbal bearing? Do I need to pull the upper housing or can I just leave it? I don't plan on moving the engine any more than to get the pressure off of the mount. Also, what's the best method to get the old plug out? Getting a slide hammer in there just ain't gonna happen.

Don S. provided me instructions on aligning the engine and I've done it once, so doing it again won't be a problem.

I'd like to take as little of this old cow apart as possible but I welcome your thoughts.

Thanks!

No need to pull drive if your just gonna support the engine weight with a hoist. You can drill or punch a hole in the plug, screw in a sheetmetal screw, and lever it out with vice-grips

Core plug was indeed rotted out:

So I removed it, just like zbnutcase said:

The big hole at the 'top' was collateral damage from removal, the small holes at the sides were the leak:

I got a shiny new brass one fresh from China:

...and I drove it carefully back into the hole.

FIXED! Thanks zbnutcase for your quick and correct reply.
