ok, i am new to boat motors, and cant afford to take it to mechanic......So, thought i do most of everything myself...
I put new water pump in, think that went well, but had hard time with connecting the linkage back up......went to try to start it, and the prop spins in neutral.........Im pretty sure that isnt supposed to happen.........How do I fix this?? Hope its an easy fix.....oh, its a 30 horse suzuki, 1989 model

Re: questions about shift linkage...

If you put it in forward or reverse you will see the linkage move, thats the only way you can catch it and link it back up properly ...

Re: questions about shift linkage...

i checked it last night when i got home.........prop in neutral when shifter in reverse position..............it was raining last night so i didnt get to mess with it...........
So, when gear shifter in neutral, the prop in in gear when it should not be.........
So,what the proper way to fix it.........drop lower end again and restab it??

Re: questions about shift linkage...

if it is in forward it will spin freely anti-clockwise, if it is in reverse it will spin freely clockwise .... (well not freely but it will make clicking sounds) .....

ok, so, when i decide what way it is spinning, am i facing it from behind the motor, like sitting on a chair spinnng the prop, or looking at it from on the boat

Re: questions about shift linkage...

Look, you are making this too complicated, the prop is shaped in such a way that it slices through the water. Look at it which way looks like it should turn to go forward.

Get the prop in neutral, put the shift lever in neutral, put it back together
