Re: questions about tides
Hi Brooke,

Tide is defined as the vertical (up and down) movement of water caused by gravitational forces of the moon and sun on the oceans of the earth.

So at high tide, the water depth is the deepest it will be. At low tide, it is the shallowest it will be.

At what times do high and low tides occur?
Generally speaking, tidal cycles contain two high tides and two low tides each day (24 hours). The time between high and low tides is a little over 6 hours and the entire tidal cycle repeats itself approximately fifty minutes later each day.

3. how are peoples lives affected by the tides?

It affects the ability to boat near shore during times near low tides, especially when entering a potentially shallow port or harbor. There are things you can only do at low tide too like dig for clams. Some fish are easier to catch during the low tide. Durig times of exceptionally high tides people's homes near the ocean can be flooded during the high tide (usually when there is a storm and a high tide occurs). That is why people get evacuated some times when a storm is coming during a period when a high tide is also expected.

Hope this helps - get an A!

I live on the Atlantic Ocean - Boston, MA
