Questions: Mercury or Yamaha ?

Hi,

I am down to 2 types of motors: 2006 Mercury Bigfoot 4 stroke 40 hp and 2005 Yamaha 4 stroke 40 hp.

Conditions of the 2 pontoon boats are similar, good to excellent condition: 2006 pontoon boat (18 ft) for Mercury motor and 2005 pontoon boat (19 ft) for Yamaha motor.

Any thoughts ?

Hey! this sounds familiar! Sounds like you are looking at pontoons with motors, since they are comming as a package, I would look at the condition/ option of the pontoon. what are the pontoons? you may find the quality of the pontoons will outweigh any motor differences.

Also, From what I understand, the Merc bigfoot was created for a pontoon, so it may have an advantage. thats why I am looking at one. Also, look at the Merc and Yamaha forums to see the issues with each. I bet you will find issues with each, depending on how they are taken care off.

Yes I am looking at pontoon boats with motors.
So how can I check the motor because I am happy with the pontoon boat itself, what's left is the motor (test drive, noise, compression, oil leak on lower unit) ? And how ?
Say for noise: What is good and no good for a 2006 Merc Bigfoot 4 stroke 40 hp ?
Compression: How to check ?
Oil leak at lower unit: How to check ? Where to see ? What to open/disconnect if any ? ...

Any input is appreciated !
