Hi

I am assembling the above engine (No manual) at the moment and I have two questions.

1: The small strips of gasket between the crankcase half's have me pussled. The are slightly larger on one side and there is a small strip of adhesive in the one side. Should they be mounted upright, so that they are much higher than apparently needed and a lot of crush. or should they be mounted lying down, where i cant see the point of the adhesive?

2:Secondly i need the torque settings for the crankase bolts?

I know, I probably should buy the manual, but Its a "quick fix"

Place the cork strips broad-side lying down, the adhesive side goes to the outer-edge of the groove. Degrease the cover so the adhesive sticks properly.

Be sure to trim the excess at the ends off, flush with the cover.

Don't forget to use a proper sealer for the crankcase halves.

Something like this does a great job:

You can also use Permatex No. 3 Aviation-type gasket dressing, on motors that have the cork seal in the crankcase flanges; but I prefer the more "modern' anaerobic sealer.

Mercury sells what they call a "Master Gasket" sealer kit which includes a tube of anaerobic sealer and a small spray can of primer. The primer speeds curing but you can do it with or without and it'll still work fine. Just make sure the surfaces are thoroughly degreased IAW mfr's instructions.

Thanks a million..

I also had planned on using an anaerobic sealer for the job, but the one I have from permatex apparently is dissolved by gasoline????? Or so the label reads.. So I guess it will be "God o?l, Fishglue, no. 3" then.. have never failed me yet so it probably wont here either. Now I just needs to locate my Locktite :)

Thanks again..
