Glad you ask! This has never been debated ever! lol..Ok maybe once or twice.

You have a LOT of options to go with beginning with no foam actually..
But I would say the following list in order are what is currently in use.

1. Closed cell pink foam from any big box DIY center
2. Poured in self expanding foam (a nightmare to remove and probably whats under your deck now.
3. POOL NOODLES (yes, 99 cent pool noodles)

Re: questions on foam under floor?

I bought 1 inch sheet insulating foam, Home Depot, the white closed bead stuff doesn't hold water like open cell foam does. Use a "keyhole" thin pointy saw to shape the foam to stack in fairly snug. Keep it in place with spray plastic foam like they use behind electrical outlets, it swells up and locks the sheets in place. Once that sets up, you can reinstall the floor boards.

I make "access ports" on the floor board centerline so I can access the keel area, with wood bulkheads to contain foam, and I get extra paddle, rods, or ?? storage too.

I'm not in love with the liquid two part mix and "watch it grow" foam mixes. I like to be able to remove the sheets if I damage the bottom somehow, or check for water if the floorboard comes unstuck.

Just a thought, if you are redoing the floor boards -- get the (poison kills mould) cheapest anti freeze, mop it on the wood, both sides, after fitting and before epoxying in place -- let it set 4-5 days till fully dry -- then epoxy in place, no more floorboard rot, and f'glass bonds to the ply just as well, maybe better.

No rot, that's hot !! Good Luck, Cal

How many pool noodles would i need? is there an equation or something? And would they hold water? because last time i was on the lake fishing in the rain all the foam held water and will be there forever til i replace im sure

Correct. They don't exactly rattle. I stuffed 'em pretty tight though.

Re: questions on foam under floor?

I used both noodles and 2" sheet in mine. There are noodles under the sheet as well. I split the noodles in half between the ribs to allow me to get more in on the sides. I used 62 noodles total and have one full case lef if anyone is interested. One hard lesson I did learn though was to make sure that in the area where you are going to bolt your seat pedestals, if you use the new Toggler bolts, leave enough room for the toggles to open.

Funny, I was wondering how you were having a hard time shoving a toggle into a noodle pile I'd forgotten you'd used sheet foam in the middle. Dulp!
