Well...finally took the boat out on the water. The motor got rebuilt because of a low compression cylinder.

First off let me say that I love this motor. Pulls skiers just fine for me. We had them put on a 13x19 prop and with two people in the boat at 5200rpm we were doing right around speedo said 50mph. I prop has some pretty nice cups at the end of the blades, so I believe the speed is pretty close to right. I do have more throttle to give it, so I think that I may need to go with either a larger diameter, or a higher pitch prop or both.

So first question:
How big of a diameter prop would you recommend for this motor. I don't want to lose to much bottom end, since I am towing skiers, etc. Wondering if maybe a 13.5 x 21 would be good to try...opinons??

Next we notice that during break-in and after that the motor has a small ratlle during deceleration, not the whole time, but rather right after you left off the gas a little. We were thinking that it may be a prop clutch of some sort, example of what we are thinking is with the boat moving forward at say 45 and then you left of the throttle a little and the rattle is there until the boat reaches the speed that the motor is turning at...thoughts?? or could this be something else?

We definately see the flat spot between 2000 & 2500 rpm, but only when you gradually come up on it, if you just hammer the throttle you would think that it isn't a (2+2) but rather a motor that runs on 4 all the time.

Other than that, all the hype with this motor not being good to ski with, I don't believe...I gave full throttle to the skier and then backed off to about 3800rpm about 28mph (no trim) motor runs awesome and plenty of power to get a skier up.

This boat is an relatively light weight 73 gemcraft southwind, so it gets up and goes in a hurry.

If you make the prop change you are thinking about you will lose power and accelerration and the flat spot will get worse

???

Little confused...I understand that the acceleration will get worse, but I don't think by much...and as for the flat spot getting worse?? maybe changing in rpm, but how can it get worse?

What I am trying to protect is the motor...if I don't want to run the motor above 5200rpm, I know I won't but if I let other people use the boat, I want to make sure that when they have the hammer down it doesn't exceed that rpm.

Going to a larger diameter prop, will actually help with the acceleration, but will drop the maximum rpm..not sure how big I should go though on the prop diameter. how far from the cavitation plate is minimum?

You are increasing, dia. which does not let the prop slip on acceleration and pitch which will hold the engine RPM down at WOT. The more load you put on a engine the more it increases existing problems, you have gotten so misinformation on the functions of a propeller, the are many flyers and books out there on props most are well worth the time to read

5200 is a bit high for this motor. You'll probably be ok for some short runs, but Mfg guidelines say nothing above 5000 rpms. Keep that in mind as you look to swap props.

hmm...The Mercury manual states 5250 as the rpm limit for my motor..this manual even required my serial # for the motor.
