'57 Javelin that just came back from the shop. I noticed a slow LU oil leak. What would happen if I remove the screws holding the very bottom of the lower unit? Can this peice be removed and reinstalled without fear of things falling out? Im not too sure what Im getting my self into.

You will be getting into a gearcase reseal job. But the proper way to open the gearcase is to remove the LU so you can easily work on it like in the pic below. I recommend a service manual.

Agreed.... It's best to go with Jasper's suggestion.

What you would like to do can be done, and has been done many times by experienced mechanics BUT there's always the chance that everything will fall out coupled with the problem of getting the long philips shift shoulder bolt aligned properly.

However, should you atempt that scenario..... have the engine tilted up as far as it will possibly go and have the unit in forward gear.

Thanks guys, I just got it back from having all new seals and bearings. Im guessing the seal somehow got smashed or moved slightly during the install. The weird part is its only leaking around one of the screws. I thought I might try to pull that one out, put some sealant in it and putting it back in. But I cant get the screw to budge.

Is it leaking around the phillips screw? If it is, they didn't replace the o-ring that goes there.

No, its leaking around one of the eight flat head screws that holds the bottom of the lower unit on.

bheff...whoever did the work, didn't put enough 847 around that portion of the shell that the screw goes through to pull it up to the upper part of the shell and form a tight seal...that or his bead broke through at that spot. Were I in your position, I'd take it back and give him a chance to correct it. A new screw might pull it up tighter and seal it...worth trying I guess.

Unfortunatly the work was a "freebie" from the mechanic that my dad employs. His marina is about two hours away. Im kinda hopeing its an easy fix so that I dont have to bug a busy guy about a free service I recieved. Guess Ill give it a shot first and see how things go. Now to get that darn screw out.

I use an impact driver to get them out. Only use enough pressure to free it up, aluminium housings bend easily.
