Trying to de gum a 96 150 efi. While working on this I unscrewed the cap to the oil reservoir. Now I get 3 beeps when I turn the key on. I don't have my repair manual, on order. Is this due to air in the reservoir?

Thanks for the quick reply. On my last merc I would only get a long beep then I would be on my way. This 3 beeps puzzled me.

Was your previous Merc a 1996 150 EFI? Different models may have different self-test beep codes.

Chris..........

Re: Quick beep beep beep

When you turn the key on, you will here "Beep Beep Beep". This is normal as stated earlier. To fill up the oil tank on the engine, just crack the cap a little, crank up engine, and watch fluid level rise as is runs. Once full, tighten tank cap, and you are good to go. Positive air pressure pumps the oil from the big reservoir up to the engine oil tank. Then it is gravity fed down into the oil/gas mixture pump.

DO NOT over tighten the cap as they have a tendancy to split at the top of the cap. Must very thin at that point. I have had 2 split on me so I am very careful, just tight enough to keep from leaking.
