I have a 1972 16' Sea Nymph semi-V with a 1976 25 HP short shaft Evinrude. I would like to maintain 2 on-board low-profile 6 gallon portable plastic fuel tanks sharing a single fuel supply hose and suction bulb in such a way that I can quickly swap tanks when one becomes empty. The typical connectors for these tanks do not appear to be optimized for this kind of use. I imagine that the plastic threads for the tank connector have a fairly short life in terms of cycles of connecting and disconnecting, even with the use of teflon tape. I would have no problem with maintaining a dedicated connector on each tank, but that raises the question of how to easily and positively connect and disconnect the fuel hose, and seal the tank when it is disconnected. Has anyone done this successfully? Are there any bayonet or other quick connect fixtures that are appropriate for this use? Thanks.

There is a very simple solution. It is called a fuel transfer or fuel selector switch/valve. These valves have two inputs and one output. Plumb one tank to one input, the second tank to the other and the output to the fuel hose with the primer bulb. You use the same quick connect fuel fittings as on the engine or made for the tank. You cannot simpy "y" the two tanks together for safety reasons. If the two tanks and not perfectly level ALL the time, the tank at the higher level can flood the lower tank via it's vent. Do this the smart way -- not the cheap way. Using an electric valve you flip a switch on the instrument panel to switch tanks. Using a manual valve you turn a lever.

Another option is to get a couple of male fuel fittings, one for each tank, and plug them to the tanks with a 4-inch stub of hose. A matching female fitting on your hose and you're done...
