Re: Quick disconnect for batteries

I use the type that Silvertip recommended for winches, jumper cables and several other high amperage quick disconnect applications and I highly recommend them, the only thing I would add is to coat these connections liberally with an anti corrosive agent when they are installed, and use the boot that should come with them, the amount of corrosion they invite is amazing when used outside in the weather and cleaning them is not fun!

Just to understand this right...

You want to be able to "unplug" your battery like an Ipod ? Quick and ez ?

Wingnuts are not the best solution.

So it takes you approx 1 min to unscrew the cables on the battery via an adjustable wrench.

Your wanting to take that 60 seconds down to 2 seconds right ?

14 bucks you can buy a set of sockets/ratchet and have those two sizes ready for the nuts off/on in 30 seconds.

My concern is that constantly bolting/unbolting the connectors will either start to strip the threads/round the bolts or weaken the connection. As far as I know the connectors are not made to be put on/taken off repeatedly. I'm thinking about truck terminals where you change the battery every 3 or 5 years. So the terminal ends will be designed for 5 or 10 cycles. I don't believe that things are over engineered. Most things are made to the lowest acceptable specs.

But thanks for the response.

Re: Quick disconnect for batteries

Is yours a marine battery with the SS wingnuts and the standard cable end with the hole or are you using traditional automotive style battery terminals?

If you use the marine wingnuts on the cables, it only takes a few second to disconnect it.

Re: Quick disconnect for batteries

like silvertip posted. They are called anderson connectors. We use them for forklift batteries. They are unplugged numerous times a day for charging and last for years. Put a set on your boat and they will last a lifetime. Depending which one you get they are rated to 400 amp dc from 12 volt to 48 volt. Check sites like McMaster Carr and type battery connector in the search box. Hope this will help. Good luck.

You're thinking way, way too much.

Nut and bolt connections do not have a cycle life and they don?t use special ? low life? screws for batteries that don?t get used much. Unless you damage the threads, there is no reason to beleive that the studs will not out live the battery. In the scerio you mention, the worst that can happen is that you may need to replace the nyloc nut every two years or so because you wear out the insert. If you stay with the "flakey" wing nuts you don't even have to worry about that.

I just dont like the idea of wing nuts ..

I also never ( personally ) have seen battery nuts being "nyloc" . Just the SS nuts or wing nuts.

As to the OP question..Yes you can use the quick connectors if your worried about damaging the copper lugs on your wires ( if that was your concern ). They sell copper washers :)

I always use the stainless nyloc nuts on my batteries.

Not using nyloc hardware on a battery post is setting yourself up for a burnt voltage regulator or worst
