I am about to put the lower unit back on my 40 hp merc after a water pump change. I need to apply a little more grease to the upper end of the drive shaft. I've ordered my manual but haven't recieved it yet. Can someone give me an idea of the type of grease I need??? I don't really care if its merc grease... actually I'd rather just get the equivalent W-mart or auto zone stuff.

Thanks!!!

Brent

Re: quick grease question

I'm not sure what the non-Merc grease is, but this is the description I have for the Quicksilver product application:

"Apply Quicksilver 2-4-C Marine Lubricant to drive shaft splines, shift shaft splines and I.D. of water tube seal.
DO NOT apply lubricant to top of shift shaft or drive shaft."

Re: quick grease question

hello
if your going to remove the unit once year almost any marine grease will work. dont use a lithium or metallic based grease. I would prefer special lube 101 or 24c but if you dont have it or cant get it almost anything is beter than nothing.

Re: quick grease question

I bought some Castrol marine grease at W-mart last night... should this be sufficient??? I don't know how it compares to the Quicksilver. I've tried to find product descriptions and they just aren't very detailed. It's not like motor oil where you've got viscosity, weight, etc...

Thanks

Brent

Re: quick grease question

hello
as long as it is a marine type grease and you do the maint at least yearly I dont see a problem. the object is to prevent spline wear and spline rust. do not allow grease on the top of the drive shaft as it may cause a hydraulic pressure and preload the crankshaft and driveshaft bearings.

Re: quick grease question

sounds good! I've heard from several people about not putting it one the top of the shaft so I'll be sure to keep it on the splines. I'm guessing it (the splines) won't require too thick of a covering considering it fits fairly tight.
