My son want's to knee board this year (he's 17 and has never tried, but is a great snowboarder/skateboarder) so i've been searching.. From what I read the Hydroslide "Revolution" is a good board for the beginner/intermediate.. My questions are this. What is the difference between a Ski/Wake board/Knee board ROPE??? And could anyone tell me how this hook system works on the revolution?? Thanks for any help/advise..

Nothing -- the key, in my opinion, is to have a rope that you can shorten because it has sections, or be willing to tie a loop into a standard rope, because every boat will have an optimum spot on the wake for jumping, getting air, and landing on the other side of the wake, which varies at different speeds.

Why go with a knee board over a wake board if he is already used to being verticle on a board, versus on his knees?

Re: Quick knee board question...

OK ... I am an old knee boarder, having had one of the first hydroslides ever produced. I still have an old school hydroslide pro -- the thick foam filled one. I still love to get on that thing each time I go boating.

I too have been looking at the newer kneeboards. I saw the revolution and thought about it. It looks to have the shape of my old pro, but be a low profile, lighter board. Thus, I think it would be a better ride.

However, in studying them even more, I think when I pull the trigger I would go for the new squarer ones, like the new pro xlt.

This is just my assumption, now having wakeboarded for a couple of years, but I bet the twin tip design, with both sides being squared off, would produce a knee board with more capabilities and pop. In fact, Overtons rates the board with a color code and them show the Revolution has being a more mild board, and the pro xlt as having the mild characteristics, as well as much more advanced characteristics.

Now, this is all just speculation. I have ridden neither. However, I would try to get some advice from someone who has ridden both before plopping down that much money, because the pro xlt is not that much more than the revolution.

Re: Quick knee board question...

I have a little experience in kneebaording and wakeboarding.

In my opinion when kneeboarding you can use a normal rope that stretches or does not. It doesn't really matter.

When wakeboarding a lot of tension is put on the rope. For this you would want a low strech rope. I have had a rope with some stretch in it fly back in the boat and smack a rider. I have even heard of stitches to the head from this. I tighter rope also helps when performing tricks.

Re: Quick knee board question...

hey broke merc...!!:)

knee boarding is a great type of water sport...my buds and i spent a summer or two trying to stop the boat on the back of a rope!.....

kids....(even 17 year old ones...)...have a fleeting intrest....

may i humbly suggest you find a used board at the auction or garage sale before forking over the 350 bucks for a good board?....

that way he can try it. see if he is gonna stick with it before you lay out that kind of cash for 1/2 a season?....if he really likes it....sounds like a b-day present waiting to happen.....

you know how kids are...one day they like macdonalds...one day they like wendys....

and the sectional rope stuff..........great stuff !

just a thought
cheers

i agree on a used boards, when it is decided he likes it, then a new one of his choice, and sell the used one.
we use to wake board with an old surf board. knee board with a piece of plywood.
the most fun was a 42 inch diameter round piece of plywood, you held the handle, got up to your knees, and the work your way to standing. these had no fins, just plywood, all these new things have no real challange.

Re: Quick knee board question...

Hey Brokemerc- I got back on the board this year after about a 14 year absence and I bought a Hydroslide 'Revolution" after fruitlessly searching for a used board awhile-

I was very pleased with how easy that "hydro hook" makes it to get up on one of those things. With the exception of being thirty five pounds heavier than I used to and not being as in shape and able to do 360's, it was and is a GREAT board for my purposes, looks good too. The knee pockets are much nicer than the old orange 1980's Hydroslide my bud had, and the O'Brien "Magic" board I rode years ago.

Now I plan on making a ski pylon for my boat, as it makes it easier to get some air as the rope on the transom eyes is not pulling "down" so to speak, and for tubing purposes as the rope cuts into the wake too much when crossing. Going to make a socket type base that ties into my stringers ahead of the motor splash well (old 15' Glasspar with a 45 Honda on 'er) and use some 2 or 2 1/2" aluminum tubing, and 1" braces to the inside of the transom. I can get the material from a place that makes towers and t tops.

umm, that's not wakeboarding or kneeboarding -- that's clearly white trash skiing.
The idea of having good equipment is to make the getting up, staying up part of the game easy. The challenge comes in learning tricks.

A dog can be trained to ride a piece of plywood, it takes a lot of time, crashes, a little athletic ability, and some dedication to learn a body-over on a knee board, or a heel-side front roll on a wakeboard.
