Hey everyone. Well a looooooong day yesterday and we are almost ready to go out on the water to test the boat. I have a question. My outdrive has vent holes for when filling the gear oil. I know pump from the very bottom. But I took out the vent plug that is where the upper and lower split. Not the very top one on the upper. So I filled only to the mid bent. Did I do this wrong? Should I have taken the highest vent plug out on the upper half and filled to that one? Please let me know so I can fix my mistake :(

So should I drain all the oil and re do it? I don't want any air bubbles.

Just fill er up until it runs out of the top hole. It fills slowly enough that the air has a chance to escape. I try to make sure that I don't pump in any air by adding to the filling bottle before it gets close to empty.

I seem to remember that the very old outdrives filled the upper and lower separately. The fact that you have a separate vent for the bottom makes me think you have an older outdrive that is filled differently than the more common newer ones. I would double check with the manual before going out in it.

Like Fishermark stated some had to be filled separately. There was no lube passage. You need to figure out what you have.

If they filled separately seems like they would need a fourth plug. If you keep pumping in the bottom and oil comes out of the very top you should be good. If it gets hard to pump and nothing comes out the top you may need to fill them separately.

I don't know what dezmond has of course - but service manual 1 describes the older outdrive that is separate as having a fill and vent in the bottom, and curiously enough, two plugs in the upper - but both at the top! One on the left, and one on the right. You actually had to pump out the oil to change it.

Now, this describes a very old drive... but I don't know of any others that have a fill and vent on the lower.

That's like what I have fishermark. But I did drain oil, removed vent plug from one side at the very top and filled from the bottom. Oil did seep out of the top so I stopped and closed everything up :). All went good today on the water. Except the prop I think needs to be changed. Another question for another topic

Yep, you're good. My MC-1 has the vent in the top part of the lower unit as Fishermark showed in the second pic, but also the lube passage to connect the lower and upper, so upper and lower get filled at the same - from the bottom plug in the lower unit.
