Quick question about tilt/trim system

I bought a rebuilt trim/tilt motor and pump. Installed them but the tilt ram was bleeding down so I bought a rebuild kit. Rebuilt the ram and all was well for a few days but now it's bleeding down again. Very slowly but bleeding down nonetheless.
It's on a 1984 Force. 85 HP. I don't know what year the tilt/trim system is because I added that a couple years ago. My boat had trim only, no tilt. I purchased a used non-working tilt trim system from a marine repair place and I made one system out of the two. I have one extra tilt ram and one extra shock absorber type ram so if I screw up one on the boat, I have a replacement to rebuild if needed.
I do know the heads of the tilt rams are different and the piston rods are different diameters. The one I installed on my boat has the smaller ram if that helps.

Any suggestions?

Re: Quick question about tilt/trim system

lift system and block into place. carefully remove oil tube from bottom of tilt ram and plug up using a 3/16" inverterted flare fitting. You can buy them from most auto parts places since it is the standard SAE brake fitting size. remove blocking and see if engine drifts down. If it drifts down the ram is bad. if it does not drift down the valve body is bleeding off.

while working with the tubing take extra care not to cross thread any ports. the aluminum is much softer then the stainless tube nuts and the threads will ruin easily. Always start the tube nuts by hand and make sure you can get 2-3 turns of clean thread by your fingers. If you cross thread a port then you may never get a good seal again without a rebuild. Repairing a port thread makes metal flakes and getting the flakes out is same as a rebuild. An ounce of prevention, in this case, is equal to ten pounds of cure.
