took the boat i got out for the first time and im having an issue. hopefully you guys can help!!!! well took it out and it seemed fine except that once at full throttle it seemed to bog, well we pump the primer bulb to see what happened and she came to life, did fine til we went to turn around. got almost threw the turn and it bogged again. got it back to the dock checked the plugs and they looked pretty good. took it out again and if we went from a dead stop to going it was fine for a bit and then would bogs out again. my bayliner has a built in tank and i cant figure out if there's a screen in there maybe getting clogged or if my fuel pump needs to be fixed. it just seems like its losing prime. any help would be greatly appreciated

My first guess would be your fuel pump diaphragm. It could be your primer bulb. How long since you have cleaned the carbs? Was your gas tank vented? How do your hoses look, are they old?

Jaybird covered the basics...check the tank to make sure it is venting first....then the bulb to make sure its holding right...meaning it does not get soft and concave...if it does get a dimple or concave look to it then its likely your issue...then if all that looks good, then check your fuel diaphram, it should be flat..if it has any kind of raised middle to it at all when laid flat on a table, then replace it. Thats the order I would go in...free to cheap...lol.

well the primer bulb is new the guy i got it from siad it needed to be replaced so for the price i figured why not and i replaced the line cause it looked old. carbs are good. ill check the vent and while im checking the diaghram im gonna look at the check vavles cause i did a search and that is another thing that come up when i searched for bogs. thanx for the ideas, if anyone else has any other ideas let me know.

another thing to check (other than the diapham, which cost like 3 bucks) is the tank itself... is it new is so you fine there. but if not the p/u screen sould have crap in it or sludge in the bottom of the tank .....

Re: quick question i need help

here is what i would try... find a buddy that has a good fuel tank and try that...( or buy a 3 gallon) My guess is if it has a built in tank that there is alot of crap in it! put a good one one it and see it it works better...
the thing that makes me think this is when you said when you turn it ran better then got worse.
but by now you probably sucked up trash into the fuel lines and diaphram. take it off replace the diaphram and clear the lines. then add a fuel filter a cheap plastic one is the best way to go.
new fuel and oil and i think youll be fine.
from what i understand those tanks are good for retaining junk because theyare hard to drain completely and hard to get to.

Re: quick question i need help

well i emptied the tank and looked in and its clean as a whistle. so i decided to take the fuel pump off and look at the diaphragm and the check valves. the check valves are good to go, but the diaphragm is all wavy and will not lay flat. got a couple pics of it:

Hi,
It's a 1985 85hp force outboard.
Did not see any force or chrysler parts on that page.
Do you have a place for chrysler?
Thanks,

i actually read on a few posts in here that it is supposed to lay flat which there is no way i can make it lay flat. also mines really stiff so it wouldnt want to move as easy.

Re: quick question i need help

Sounds like its time for a new diaphragm. FYI, I just replaced mine and ran it on muffs once, then I decieded to replace the check valves. I noticed that the brand new diaphragm was already starting to 'curl up' but was still plyable. I quickly put it in a ziplock bag while replacing the check valves and everything seems fine for now. I have ran it twice since on muffs with no problems. I think when they are left out to dry it may ruin them.

Re: quick question i need help

Anybody know where to buy a diaphram for a 85hp 85 force?
Also,I did not check the check valves when I had the diaphram out.

Do I need to take more off to see them?
Guess I wasn't aware of those at the time.

Re: quick question i need help

If you have a mercury dealer near you they may have it. A little internet search and you should find one no problem. Attached is a picture of the check valves on the pump. 2 of the valves are easy to remove. The third, you may have to get creative.

I checked at boats.net for you, and for all serial number engines I didn't see anything to do with the fuel pump under 1985 85 hp motors. As mentioned earlier, a google search or something might find ya one!
