I have decided to purchase a overheat switch to replace my broken port side temp switch as hard to source one with the quick start that doesn't cost 300 bucks. Anyone see any issues with me running the white and black though a switch to ground to enable and disable? or should i just wire white and black straight to earth and bypass quick start completely?

Gee, what motor are your discussing?

Overheat switches on some models control both Quickstart and SLOW mode, if you overheat. Removing the overheat protection is a bad idea.

Hey Chris thanks for the reply. its a 1989 140hp. From my understanding, my port side temp switch has a tan wire for overheat and the white black wire is a thermal controlled switch set to close at a low temp for the quick start. My plan is to replace it with just a straight overheat(tan wire switch) as they are cheap and readily available. That way the overheat circuit will continue to work in the same capacity, and then add a switch to ground for the white black wire to trick the engine out of quick start mode after she has warmed up.

OK, that sounds like it will work.

You might look around and see if you can get a better price on the combo sensor. That price seems awful high, and they were likely used on many models.

Can you use the old temp sensor for overheat?

Yea unfortunately all evinrude stuff in Australia is expensive. Therefore, the cheaper ones come from the US but after conversion and postage ends up about the same. No the orignal one was no good.
