Quick timing question

Hi all,
I have a 2001 Mercruiser 5.7L TBI. My boat presently does not have an issue (knock on wood) but I enjoy learning how to do things before I need them... Anyway, I have a couple of questions regarding checking your timing. I believe I found the timing mark and what appear to be marks in 3 deg increments by sticking my camera down if front of the engine and taking this picture:

I could not see this from the top of the engine and I would not want to stick my hand (or timing light) down in front of the engine while it is running because the gap is very small. Where do people put the timing light and view the marks? Is in necessary to move hoses out of the way to see it?

Thanks- Dshow
