we have to get our 1990 Glastron 175 Sierra that we're cleaning up and prepping for a new owner![/B] SELLING IT...to many boats..seasons over.. ones gotta go!

Vacuumed, cleaned, painted all the window trim matte black (it was brassed in the edges) the wife scrubbed the carpet, armoralled the upholstry, removed all the stuff, damn I didnt know a little boat could hold so much clutter!!!!!!
It was like our garage!! lol about 100 life preservers, fishing gear, extra back up parts, snorkling gear...etc...kids junk for the beach yadda yadda

the trailer was knackered up....lots of rock chips LOTS of rock chips, faded paint, chipped and cracked pinstriping etc.....
washed all that down, scrubbed up the tires and rims, heat gunned the trailer pinstripe tape, scraped it all off, acetone removed the glue residue nicely.

Sanded the whoe trailer down with 240 grit sandpaper....used rust converter on all the visible rust, resanded those areas with 100 grit, then 400, applied glazing putty to all teh chipped areas, re sanded those with 100 to knock it down then 400, wiped the trailer down with degreaser wax remover H.E.T.

masked it all off (what a pain that was!) shot single stage, Urethane automotive acrylic paint...looks slick now! (got 1/2 painted, the rest should be done by tomorrow....)
Did a quickie touch up paint on the sterndrive mercruiser...all the paint was a bit faded...quick sand down to rough it up and a coat of auto acrylic gloss black

then on to a quick engine tune up and carb cleanout....check the timing....
the oil was recently changed so that's good to go.....rockin on!
heres a link to about 20 pics

amazing what a little elbow grease and paint will do. Why do we wait so long though to do it?

hah ha no sheet...
I definitely should've done this when we BOUGHT the boat, not when selling!
Any new boat for us will have the trailer gone over the first season!

the PO rigged everything....wasn't much of a repairman I guess....
Lets put a fine thread nut on a coarse thread winch! YEAH and crossthread it on YEAH! this is fun yea thats just the surface......

Re: Quickie Trailer RE-Do repaint using automotive paints

the other day was 1/2 the work, the other half of the trailer we did today, Prepped and Painted took several hours what a pain!

also fixed some stuff we should have fixed when we bought the boat 14 months ago...
the PO had a fine thread on a coarse thread on the nut that holds the winder arm on for the winch...used a hacksaw blade to remove the metal in between the threads, then a thread file to clean it up, then a tap and die to re thread it nicely...found a nut in my toolbox, used loctite to hold it secure. (No room for a lock washer......)

we also cleaned and painted the jack leg.......(will post a pic asap)

and I cut the seatbelt looking material for the winch, removed 4 feet of knackered line and re sewed it onto the hook...yet another time sewing has saved me a ton of money! To heck with Geico!!!

also removed the PO installed spare, it was held on poorly with these HUGE square nut thingys, woulda needed a 1" wrench or a adjustable wrench to remove em.... plus it was in a bad spot, going to add a real spare tire holder that uses lug nuts to hold it on etc....make it right.

so much for "QUICK" 2 days work prep and paint...
almost done, just gotta put some pinstriping on and add the winch/jack assys....
SELL SELL SELL!! lol

thanks Gary!

well the trailer is done, put the winch / jackand lights back on, pinstriped it red and silver...looks like new ! not bad, pinstriping $9 total...paint (used about a quart) so $45 for paint - so $55 plus 2 days elbow grease = looks like new-er trailer!

Going to try the winch in this new location, it used to be INSIDE the bow stop frame...now up top of it...

Thanks 180

Side note ....Mask off your boat better than I did, but the boat cover on....or better remove the boat!
would make it alot easier....
if you have to do it with the boat on the trailer....it's hard to get the spray gun (I used an HVLP) with a gravity feed cup.....not much room for spraying when you're under there, and hittung the tops of the cross beams was near impossible, I had to shoot a beam of paint from the sides onto the tops of the braces...not the best for perfect painting!

also mask off that freshly painted sterndrive, I spattered white all over my new paint and had to re spray it...DOH!

ps make sure to use the grease/oil/ remover before spraying, otherwise especially with automotive paints, you will get fish eyes.

Whoa... Nice job on the trailer.

In the spring I'll leave the boat at a marina for a couple of days while I get the trailer done up with POR-15 paint.

It's amazing what a little sanding and paint can do for an old boat or trailer.

I've never been a fan of painted trailers being in a saltwater area, but they sure do look pretty all done up like that.

I've got an older Shoreland'r that's in line for a restoration soon, I'll probably just sell it when it's done since the salt here tears them up pretty fast.

Well MTtribe I wont lie....I used good old rattle can on this...shoulda bought automotive paint and prepped it right....since we are selling I cut corners on this I admit! But..the paint below is original and not peeled...so its more of a gloss coat than protection....it will prob peel off the bottom of the skeg area after a season...especially if its beached much

it was looking a bit knackered....the paint was going flat from the hard water out here...leaves a matte finish on anything the water touches...super hard alkali residue...anyways...YES I RATTLE CANNED IT

Yeah I bet, I used to live in Mich, and they salted the roads in winter, tore up some cars bad...lotta "AYUH" bondo buggies up that way....guess it would wreak havok on trailers! Paint does wonders!

Thanks Vert
from now on (as we can afford) any new boat trailers are getting the royal re-do the first couple weeks we own em......heck with fixing and selling em off, I want to use em when they are nice!

we also rewired it, I butt connected the wires, heatshrink covered em and then used electrical tape from one end to the other on all exposed wiring, zip tied em in nice and close the to frame....and since the lights were added earlier this year...thats is essential all new too...and a new trailer connector...

PS the rough running motor condition was a blown head gasket!
FIXED took apporx 7 hours total and $35 for the head gasket $5 for thread sealer for the head bolts....shes timed out nice, the valves are adjusted and she starts instantly runs super smooth!

Hey Vegas -

The 240 grit you used to sand down, you weren't trying to get to metal were you? You were just roughing up the paint and cleaning away the rust?

Your trailer looks nice and it is a project I would like to do to my own.

I have seen your other work on the forums and you definitely do nice work.

Cheers to you and your wife :)

Re: Quickie Trailer RE-Do repaint using automotive paints

Hi guys and thanks
I agree on the prop! I had a SS prop on there but put this one year old prop on when I sold the boat....made some $$$ extra on selling the Stainless props separately...they wouldnt have added any value likely anyways...

that boat and trailer are long gone! SOLD last season....good riddens! we got our SLEEKCRAFT that we LOVE LOVE LOVE and would reccommend one to anyone for lake river etc use...ocean might be a bit rough for her (3 -4 ft swells ok, 5 and 6 ft NO WAY)

oh the 240 grit was used to prep the surface rough it up for auto paint,,, I cheated a bit and sanded away any rust, feathered edges on chips and filled em with automotive spot putty, then painted it after a quick wipe down with degreaser.....wonder how long it will last? should be goo enough for 4-6 season I figure....either way Id do it all the same again, after all its JUST a trailer :D
