I was suprised I couldn't find any 25W-40 in any other brands? What do you use in your 5.0 220HP Mercruiser?

Is the QuickSilver 25W-40 a synthetic oil? Doesn't say on the bottle.

No,Just over priced bulk oil with the Quick Silver name on it.
But they are about the only ones selling 25W-40

Myself i have always ran Rotella T SAE 30...about 12 bucks a gallon at any auto parts store or truck stop.

There is both a Quicksilver synthetic and non-synthetic. If it doesn't say synthetic, its a conventional oil. I think the label is blue vs a maroon for synth.

And I've been running Rotella 15w40 in mine. The brand new engine did get QS oil and a QS filter for warranty reasons, but once thats up, its back to the other stuff. I'm not a petrol engineer, but I understand what "manufacturer's specified lubrication" means on warranty paperwork.

I hate opening a can of worms but I use Rotella 15-40 in just about everything.

Unfortunately a mere shadow of it's former reputation. It used to be one of the last oils that still had a pre-manmade global warming level of zinc in it. It was one of the last holdouts because it was intended for diesel engines. Sad to say the zinc is all but gone from it now.:(

Thre is no advantage to synthetic oil. If you change your oil at the end of the season every year the odds are yoiu have not pout enough hours on it to make any difference at all.

In all the years and all the boats I've rebuilt, I have NEVER seen an ngine failure due to "bad oil". (Filthy from never being changed maybe.)

quicksilver 25w40 is a semi-synthetic blend, part dino part synthetic.
not cheap but i like it. engines cost a lot, so maybe a little less to
worry about. my next boat will use full synthetic.

AND along those same lines.......Most Marine types will tell you (if they are honest) that they have NEVER seen an engine failure due to TYPE of oil either.

You can literally run ANYTHING as long as you change it every year at the end of the season.

ALL the modern oils will work pretty much just fine.

If you don't want to use Merc 25W40, then use ANY brand 30Wt oil.

It just doesn't matter!!

Re: QuickSilver 25W-40 a must?

I used to use the Rotella T till my last oil change. Was having big problems with the oil getting too hot. Its just not the same oil it used to be.
I switched to Valvoline Racing SAE 50wt. I'm hard on stuff. The Valvoline Racing still has high levels of anti-scuff agents like zinc and phosphorus since they stamp it with an "off road only". I haven't had the hot oil problems or dropping of oil pressure over a long high rpm run anymore.

If you're running a roller motor I would run a good 30wt or the Mercruiser stuff. You'll be fine. I would stay away from 10-30w and 10-40w weight stuff cause it won't stand up to the heat a marine engine puts into the oil and will break down in a hurry. May not ever cause a problem but it gives piece of mind when you're out playing.

If you don't have a flat tappet camshaft, those zinc additives are a lot less important. For those of us with flattie motors (I have one of each for various stupid reasons) we need the zddp. From what I understand, the John Deere oil has the good stuff in it, though I've not really looked into that. A lot of racing blend oils have it as well.

Zackman, I read the MSDS. I like the part that says keep away fron extreme heat, sparks, and open flame.
