quicksilver control box 8pin to a 10pin harness questions? Can I splice?

My boat has a quicksilver commander control, the neutral button is gone and seized, it is aslo probably worn pretty well. I purchased a new never used quicksilver control on ebay same as mine but with newer mercury and yamaha 10 pin harness. I have a manual and replacing the harness inside looks impossible by a non-professional. My alternative is to splice my old 8-pin harness to the new control with a 10-pin harness, my plans are to cut the harness at about 4 feet and solder each wire and insulate to my 8-pin harness. The manuals give descriptions for the colors and I think they stay the same with 2 exra wires. The joint would be protected under the gunwale.
Anybody have another suggestion.

Solder and heat shrink tubing, some electrical tape over the hear shrink u should be good to go. Have not done what you are doing but have done this on many other boat electrcal products. good luck
