Anyone bought one of these mini Quicksilver tachs?

I followed the destructions, except because this is a race boat and I take hte engine off very frequently I put some quick disconnects on.

exactly 3 wraps around one of the plug wires, ran the wires away from the other wires..

I'm afraid the wire I used may be more silver than copper (Good stuff), but it may not be picking up the inductance it needs.

I'm going to try copper wire, just wanted to see if an yone else had this issue.

Mine's on an 8hp Merc shortshaft.....2003 model.

The issue is, it shows like 610rpm when idling, if I rev it up I see it go to 1k or maybe 1200 then it either blanks back to minutes run (Indicating no signal) or it just stays at the 1000rpm......
Neat tach and cheaper than a Tiny Tach.

Re: Quicksilver tach

I used one of those on my microlight aircraft years ago. If memory serves the piece that you wound around a spark plug wires was solid copper, not stranded. Don't know if that would make a difference. I also recall that I split the wire halfway through a mil spec plug, and I had no problems.

Sounds good, I was thinking there was a reason they used solid copper on the hot and st randed on the ground.

I'll get some solid core 18 guage and try again!

Re: Quicksilver tach

OK I"M back on this topic again - anyone? :)

I wired it exactly per the destructions, 3 wraps going the same way....I have quick disconnects near the front of the motor but the wire IN the motor is now 20 guage solid core, same as the merc wire....

It works, shows 750 at an idle, revs up, goes up to 1800 nicely.

Just doesn't seem to capture the top end very well.

This is an 8hp Merc 2003 outboard used for racing (See my avatar) - I'm going to need to see this thing at 5000 rpm if my engine gets that high.

So I held the throttle at full for about 10-15 seconds and the highest it got as 4000 rpm.......

That normal? Hard to say what the actual revs were, maybe it was only 4k.
