For about a week my dog Lily (princess Lily as we some times called her) was really timid when we called her in the house, this was not that unusual we suspect that she was abused as a puppy we got her at around a year old. Then on monday night she only ate half of her food witch is very unusual for her. she did go back later and finish it. tuesday she was not interested in food at all, the same wednsday, i tried giving her some maple syurp to make up for the lack of sugar in her system she took a couple licks and turned her head. she still was drinking water although not as much as usual so tursday i decided that if i couold not get her to eat i was taking her to the vet on friday. I came home from work and called for her but did not see her in her dog house and it was raining, i though you dumb dog must me laying in the rain so i steped pout side and sure enough she was laying in her favorite hole next to the house. I wistled and called her and she didn't move, instantly a lump started in my throat i walked over to her in the rain and nuged her hoping she was sleeping but she wasn't. Now I'm 31 years old 6'2 235 lb man but i'm not afraid to say i started balling like a 2 year old. I ran in to the house to wake up my wife (she works nights but it was only 5 min before her alarm went off). This is only the second dog i hav ever lost and it was a very hard lost.

Sorry, man. We've all been there. I've even done the cryin' in the rain thing. If it's any consolation, it doesn't get any easier on the 3rd, 4th, or 5th one either. And it shouldn't.... :(

Well they say the best way to heal from the loss of a pet is to get another, it seams soon but a local breader had 3 11 week old akc registered german shepherds left. and that is what we always said we would get some day so we brought one home. We still miss Lily like crazy but the puppy makes us laugh alot

We lost our Basset hound Nicky to to cancer last year at the age of 11 months, we were devastated, my wife who is severe bi-polar, I became very nervous that she would relapse so I ended getting another one with in 2 weeks. You never get over the loss..................

[SIZE=+1]Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

yep on getting a new pet. i lasted less than a month after i lost my last one before i had a new pet. it don't cure the loss and i know i'll always remember my past pets for sure.. but a new one helps..

Re: R.I.P. Lily you were a good dog

As far as a 'replacement', I'm not sure what is best.

If 'Star' (My Boykin Spaniel) left before me (remember, neither dogs nor people have a lifetime guarantee), I know I'd need another dog. And I know Boykins are perfect for me (smart, wants to please the Alpha (me), medium sized, loves retrieving, ignores shotgun booms, and LOVES water).

But I just somehow don't like the idea of a "replacement" Boykin.

I think I'd have to go with a similar, but different breed. Or maybe something with 'roots' to Star. I once saw an accidental cross breed of Star's dad (Boykin) with a Lab. Looked exactly like Star-Lab-sized. If it came to it, I think something off this new line might do. I don't really like thinking about it.

P.S. And I'll bet Lily was a damn good dog.

Jim

Sorry to hear about Lily, We too recently lost our cruising companion Bogey (avatar) and it still doesn't feel right without him constantly under foot.

ne,

Dude, I missed your post, but I see you got a German Shepard DOG!

I still miss Kelly from 40 years ago! A "Police Dog!" I named HIM Kelly when I was about 9 - I didn't know it wasn't a boy dog's name. Although not the brightest dog - he would eat alarm clocks when he thought the noise might bother us - he was very friendly to anyone who wasn't weird, and was Very protective of us kids. I always felt extra safe with Kelly. Bully-kids give German Shepards respect.

At any rate, be aware that German Shepard Dogs are very protective. Get him used to new people. (Also be aware that to dog folks, the name is "German Shepard DOGS", not "German Shepards".)

Re: R.I.P. Lily you were a good dog

Jim is right about the territorial/protective nature of GSD's.

We have a mix GSD and Husky - another territorial breed and whenever we go camping she actually walks around the site and establishes HER perimeter, and as long as people walking by stay outside HER zone she just watches them, but if they enter - all bets are off. She always keeps herself between my wife and/or daughter and the front door of the house too. Funny thing - the only incedent we've ever had at the house was when the COPS banged on our door at 3:30 in the morning - after she tore through the screen door and "escorted" him back to the street(her self identified perimeter demarcation), we found out they were at the wrong house - address they were looking for doesn't even exist.

My daughter will be 6 months old next week and it is almost hard to believe it is the same dog when you see them together, so cautious and gentle.
