Hello,

I'm back :)

I have an Alpha I Gen II, I will be doing the Bellows, Gimbal bearing , impeller and Trim Sender Kit. I was thinking about the U-Joints, that maybe I should replace them while I have the drive off along with the Gimbal seal.

The reason why is I have no idea when any of this has been done and I don't want to have to do it when something happens.

Now if I do do the U-Joints will I need any tools like the Spanner Wrench, I have an alignment tool. what about the Gimbal seal will I need anything for that. Sorry if this is basic but my first time doing this stuff on a boat. I know my way around a car ( I use to turn wrenches ) and I assume that will be a big plus.

I would not recommend simply replacing the u joints just because you have the drive off. You will take the drive off probably a couple of times a year for various inspections, etc. And you have already discovered that it is pretty easy to remove.

If there is some doubt as to whether or not they are good, then yes, go ahead and replace them. But if they show no symptoms - noise, sloppiness, etc, then I would leave them alone. They last a long time normally.

By the way - I notice you are in North Port - I'm just south of you in Pt Charlotte - real close to the North Port line. Greetings from a fellow SW Floridian! ;)

That's nice to know there are others in the area that post/read this form.

The reason why I'm was thinking about it is, when I got the boat it needed work and still needs more work and I have no idea what was done. I'm thinking that since I will be in there I can take care of it now so maybe in next week or two I won't have to go in and do the work then.

Don S. Thanks for the link I will have a look

I have an issue , I have a Stern Drive Lock and I have no key for it's a free spinning collar that turns if attacked by gripping tools without loosening the lock.

Any one know of how to get it off, I'm trying to get with the person I got the boat from but as of yet I have not been able to.

It's funny - I answered this and my answer disappeared. If there is a double post by me somewhere, I apologize in advance.

Anyway - I believe the common way to remove a lock like that is to weld it together. Having said that, I suppose they are all different. But welding I believe works on most.

I dont know anything about the lock!

But, while you have the drive off make sure you grease the fittings on the U-Joint if they are not loose. You need to get that old greese out and replace it with new.

Some newer model Alpha's have no grease fittings!!
