Went to get two tires and a front end alignment for the wifes car. About $200.00 for all. I get a call and they say that I need my Rack and Pinion repaired. I told them I din't have the money right now. No front end alignment was done of course. I get an estimate of $430.00. Is this right? Not a big car guy so I'm lookin for advice.
Thanks!

Re: Rack and Pinion Question

Depending on the car... pulling the rack is an ugly job. Last one I did I think the rack alone was close to $200 for a reman. Had to tear down most of the front end to get it out, plus drill out a bolt that snapped off. Took the better part of a Saturday to do it.

If your tire stores are anything like ours, I'd get a second opinion  .

Some racks interface with the ECU (variatronic), big bucks to rebuild! Depends what you have.

Aldo

Just another variation on the 'leaking shock' routine, huh? :D

Or is it just the tie rod ends that are worn out?? Find out where the play is.

Re: Rack and Pinion Question

when a rack goes out you usually have some form of binding in the steering. sometimes you notice it on a cold morning. The mechanic may see that the boot on the rack is cracked or something. Get them to show you whats wrong.

I agree with the fellas here telling you to have them show you exactly what is wrong. If a steering rack is bad, it's usually noticed by the driver. If Mrs Big Poppa G hasn't noticed anything, then it may not have much of a problem at all.

What kind of vehicle? How many miles? Were the last set of tires worn unevenly?

Re: Rack and Pinion Question

Got it checked at Pep Boys. Not my first choice but got good price on tires and front end alignment. The car was checked last weekend. This weekend it is going to the dealer for two recalls they are going to fix. The guys said he would look at the Rack and Pinion while he has it. We also have our own mechanic who will look at it then for no charge. That will be three different mechanics looking at it within two weeks. Can't ask for more then that.

Wife said that the steering wheel shakes when she speeds up but we know that the front end is WAY out fo align. Hence the purchase of two front tires and trying to get an alignment. The last set of tires has wear on the outside edge of both tires down to no tread being there.

The car is a 94 Chrysler Concorde with roughly 80,000 miles on it.

Sometimes a wheel weight will sling off and cause a shake or vibration but it wouldn't cause a tire to wear.

Extreme Alignment problems are usually the after effect of other problems.

Shaking can be caused by several things.
Bad tire
Tire out of balance
Bad tie rod, inner or outer
Bad ball joints
Bad strut/shock/mount

Steering racks can bind up or start leaking fluid. Some GM's suffered from "morning sickness" that went away once things got warmed up. I don't know how it would cause a shaking unless something was worn real bad. Even then, to me I'd be looking over the whole front end for other worn parts that would have affected the rack.

Good luck Poppa

Re: Rack and Pinion Question

The 'inner' tie rod end is the knuckle inside the Rack & Pinion. If that is worn it will cause symptoms similar to an worn outer tie rod end - worn tyres, vibrations etc. Some knuckles are adjustable, some aren't. These big tire stores don't fix, they replace. Its easier for them to quote you on a changeover unit rather than tear it down and have a closer looksee.

IMO Your regular mechanic should be more accomadating.

As you can probably tell, I don't like big tire stores, I don't trust their diagnostics skills (or lack there of). Too many tire fitters, not enough mechanics.

Aldo

Re: Rack and Pinion Question

Usually a front end alignment won't cause a shake. It will cause a pull to one side or the other. It can cause it to shake but not as a rule. Most shakes are caused by worn or out of balance wheels and tires. A good way to tell the alignment is tire wear.
The shaking or vibrating when she speeds up is probably not alignment or tires. If it ONLY does it when speeding up, it may be driveline. If it is front wheel drive it is probably a CV joint or universal joint. Possibly tranny wear. Often I see mechanics replace steering racks or front drive shafts axles etc when a boot is cracked or torn. This is not necessary. The boots are kind of expensive, but don't as a rule cause further problems. Steering racks will usually bind as someone else said. When it is cold, as you turn the steering wheel slowly to one side, sometimes both sides, it will have a stiff spot. You will feel a catch, then the wheel will turn normal.
A lot of mechanics, especially at those assembly line places like pep boys will make a mistake in their terminology. I have seen people calling tie rod ends struts and other things like that. Find a mechanic who can check the entire front end. Most will do a free inspection with the hopes they can fix the problems.
The price is about right for a steering rack, but make sure the rack is really bad. It is often mis-diagnosed.

You guys have been a hugh help. And you showed me a thing or two. I will have it checked out by my guy before any work is done. He is a down home good old boy who does honest work and has good prices. Just doesn't sell tire. ;)
