Rack and pinion steering/ jack plate issue

When I got my 84 18' Ranger two years ago, it needed just one 12 foot Morse cable. I changed it with no difficulty, running it through the original hole not made for a jack plate. Not too long ago one of the techs on here mentioned that if you run the cable through the same hole it will be bent more than normal. I certainly could see that when I replaced it! Although it's still easy enough to steer I can already feel it getting harder to turn. My question is: When I have to replace this cable again and make another hole so that there is not such a severe bend in it, is it likely that the standard 12 cable will fit? I've only seen these cables in one foot increments.

Re: Rack and pinion steering/ jack plate issue

James, First make sure the cable itself is getting bad. Remove the nut on the tilt tube and see if the cable still is stiff. If not, either the cable end is binding in the tilt tube or the OB is starting to bind.

I have a jackplate on my speedboat. The steering cable is fine, coming thru the splashwell.

if it turns out to be the cable, why not get a 13 footer?

Thanks Chris The 13 footer does seem like the logical choice. I just didn't know how much play I could have and still have it function properly. Were the steering cables for your speed boat originally designed to be used with a jack plate?

No, I added the jackplate and the cable was long enough to still work. Lucky I guess,
