Re: rack and pinion vs rotary?

from what I have been told...the NFB system will hold against torque...even when you let go of the wheel....

A rotary cable rotate in a circular helm. Rack and Pinion's cable travels side to side.

Anyone else have input on this? I appreciate ezmobee's response, can anyone else add anything? I have rack steering and I'm not crazy about the feel of it. I know hydraulic would be the best but not really up for paying $800+ for a system. I know what the NFB setup does but is ther emuch of a difference in feel betweek rack and pinion and rotary?

To elaborate...I found my rack to be fairly sloppy. It was a brand new Teleflex system. I just installed a brand new Uflex rotary and it seems much less sloppy. I have not had it on the water yet. I have heard mixed reviews on the NFB systems.

Racks are typically used when there is minimal clearance behind the helm mounting flat. The NFB 4.2 has been installed millions of times by builders all over the world, an excellent helm, but, of course, no where near hydraulic.

I've been building boats now for 16 years, Wellcraft/Aquasport, Hydra-sports, Intrepid, Stamas Yacht, Proline...probably have installed 2000 steering systems, mostly Teleflex Seastar, but a damn good bunch of NFBs...and not one rack and pinion. That should tell you something...go with the 4.2 NFB!

Well that's unambigous at least! Thanks both of you for your feedback.
