Hey Guys,

I have a 14' sierra boat with cable and pulley steering system. I would like to upgrade to a New rack or cable type steering system. Which is better? I have a 40hp Mercury OB. The old sytem needs replacing of the cable and I feel that if Im there already I would replace the old with a new system... :)

Re: Rack or cable Steering system

The newer systems are either rack, or rotary. Both use the same single cable.

Your choice comes down to which one will fit under the helm.

Re: Rack or cable Steering system

I installed a brand new Teleflex rack system in my last boat (and upgrade from a cable/pulley system like yours) and I installed a brand new UFlex rotary system in my current boat. I personally prefer the rotary. Seems to have a little less slop. I MUCH prefer either system to the old squeaky cable/pulley system.

You may need to add one of these http://www.iboats.com/Corrosion-Res...5764940--**********.611379388--view_id.192758 if your current motor does not have a tilt tube.
