Radar detectors?

It's been 17 years since I've purchased my trusty Passport (the original) and since a recent ticket (first in 7 years - passport at home in the closet  ) and an near-miss today, it may be time for a full time installation of the latest radar/laser technology.

I don't know where to begin  .

I loved the Passport, but it's younger brothers still clock in about $300 ( I paid $210 in 1986 - when the Passport was about the only game in town), whereas nowadays, Cobras and others are under $100.

Any input appreciated.

Re: Radar detectors?

I use a "bel" $200.00 and it actually works for that low price. Has 3 bands "k" "x" and "ka" as well as laser.

Yup. And with "instant on" radar it tells you that you've just been busted.

Other places it tells the Fuzz that you have it and it is on, and you get busted anyway.

Why not just cooperate, or come close enough to the "gray" zone so they don't stop you??

Mine is a Uniden LDR757.

It was recommended by a cop (a good friend)
It's saved my bacon a number of times.

X, K, KA, LASER...360 degree...the whole smash. It only cost $75 (at the time) on EBay.

It also suppose to be 'anti-radar-detector' too. The type that tells THIER radar you don't have a detector.

I bought this one some time ago, so who knows if it's the latest-n-greatest. All I know is...It works!

Now if I could get something to work on photo-radar. I was thinking of smudjing my license plate so it's unreadable...?

H.

Never needed one of these units. Just cant bring
myself to fly over the speed limit. I guess
I am not in that big a hurry. I'll get there when
I get there.

Re: Radar detectors?

I agree...Just stay under the limit.

BUT...It's the speed traps that get you. Coming off a 45 to a 25 etc... Those are the ones that get you even if you are not speeding.

I don't speed for the most part either. I like having a detector to see where Johnny-law is, or those speed-checking gizmos.

Heck, as bad as it's getting here, you have to speed just to keep up with traffic.
And in some states (CA I think) you can actually get a ticket if you are not keeping up with traffic even if they are speeding (which they are most of the time on the hwy...not bashing you guys in CA ;) )

H.

I can't agree more guys. Look at it in the most basic way possible.
Over here there's a cop who was on the news showing off that he'd ticketed $10,000 in an 8hr shift with a radar gun. Now there's folk that have complained bitterly that it's too much, but I think if they're prepared to speed then let them be ticket fodder. We all know the rules and after a few years in the fire brigade I also know the mess that would ensue an accident.
Just follow the law! It's that simple........
Ross

Re: Radar detectors?

Most speed limits are based on some rubber-stamp traffic study, some community "standard", or simply pulled out of someone's rear-end and usually do not reflect safe traffic flows.

Anyone remember the U.S. "National" 55 MPH speed limit? What a great idea that was! Lot's of lives and fuel saved in that political fiasco.

The Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1954, built thousands of miles of interstate roads (based on the German Autobahns) designed to safely handle speeds of up to 100 MPH. And that was for 1950's automobiles!

I drive as fast as I feel I safely can, without endangering other vehicles, or my passengers.

Anyone who has driven I25 between Buffalo and Casper, Wyoming, can probably concur, that 85-90 MPH, is not that big of deal. And that's with my WIFE driving.

Besides, somebody has to help pay for those slick police cruisers and fancy radar guns :D

Marty

Re: Radar detectors?

I got more tickets with my radar detector than before and after I had it, combined. Most were instant on. With one, I actually was going the speed limit. When the cop stopped me, he faced me to the next sign ahead of where he stopped me and asked what it said. It was 10 miles an hour slower than the last sign. Since I had not gotten to that point, I was going the speed limit. I was going to fight it in court and went back to take pictures to explain my case. When I got there, the highway department was changing the signs bringing the whole area down to the lower speed limit. Oh well, that was 15 years ago and my last ticket.

I agree that the highways were made for greater speed, but people are not trained to drive that fast. Also, a lot of cars are not made to move safely at that speed in an emergency. One of my bonehead maneuvers was to drive my Intrigue too fast on wet pavement. The car I was passing at 75 came into my lane suddenly as the driver reached down for something. The emergency maneuver I had to do, broke the rear end loose. Luckily there were no other cars around, the other car hit their brakes and I fish-tailed into both lanes. I did get the car under control, but I should have slowed down since I knew the car has very poor lateral stability. It would have been worse in an SUV, I would have rolled it.

Re: Radar detectors?

Thanks guys i need a few more tickets in my little book this month and it looks good on paper. :D :D :D Searously though guys the speed is not worth it. just figure your ins. and fines and see what a ticket will cost you. I only ticket in school and hosp. and residentual zones. Just my way though.

Re: Radar detectors?

Many years back I had slowed down on a California turnpike so I wouldn't miss my exit and got pulled over. All he did was tell me..."If you are going to hold up traffic then get off the turnpike."I Stayed with the flow the rest of the way!!!!!!The few months I had a detector were the same as Scoop's.Now I just keep it down.
