i have a 50hp motor and im wondering how to figure out how big of a amp i can go with out killing my battery or hurting the gen. on my motor thanks for any answers

What year, make and model of engine are we talking about. They are not all the same you know. The alternator may be as low as 6 amp or as high as 16 amp depending on engine. A boat with a 50 HP engine would fall in the 16 - 17 foot range and hardly in need of an amp but to each his own. The alternator output has nothing to do with how big and amp you install. It has a bearing on how long it would take the alternator to charge the battery however. The larger the amp, the less time it will take to discharge the battery.
