Hi All

looking for idea's as to why sound cuts out/display dims, dual head unit installed in a 93 Bayliner, pretty simple install, 1 wire to switched on + (ran through acc. switch/fuse block)1 to constant power for memory, 1 to ground (ran to fuse block neg, and 4 speaker wires (2 hooked up)ran wires for 4, unit will sometimes work fine then display will dim and no sound, will work upon resetting or disconecting wires for a bit then the same, exchanged unit allready to eliminate a bad one, same problems, has to be power or ground I would think but tried bypassing all to battery with same issue, 1 time sound would "hiccup" when volume turned past low, any idea's????

Re: Radio install help

sounds like the wire feeding the stereo may be to small and the voltage is dropping. Test the wires then turn on the stereo and see if you still get 12v.

Re: Radio install help

Thoughts:
1. Low battery
2. Corroded or loose connection(s) somewhere
3. Improper speaker hookup causing overload of the amp
4. Some combination of the above

Never thought of wire size, ran a new one I think was 16 g, I will check it out, THANKS

Battery fully charged and fairly new, ran new wires for everything and quadruple checked speakers, my original thought, Thanks for the help

Re: Radio install help

Okay, time for more detective work.

When this happens, is the motor running?

Re: Radio install help

If one of your speaker wires is shorting out this can happen, some aftermarket units do this to protect the amp.

NYB0, just checked voltage at battery, fuse panel, switch, wires at radio (switched off) and switched on, all read 13.8 volts so thats not it, this is all with the motor off, wire for constant has 2 inline fuse's due to splicing in to an exsisting power line, I dont think that should do it since it draws so little and memory holds as it should, when I have time I will unhook speakers and try them seperate and use a different one although they did work on occasion, I was pretty carefull not to cross any wires when i hooked everything up,

Re: Radio install help

figured it out, the radio draws more power from the constant + line (memory)than I thought when turned on, had spliced into an exsisting line and had 2 inline fuses on it so the voltage draw was stepped down causing the issue. ran a new line...

While that apparently fixed the issue, I doubt the constant on current was the issue. That line draws so little power it could not possibly cause the issue by itself. If current draw on that line was very high, it would run down a battery very quickly when the boat is not in use.
