Not unless you hook up an amp and some 10s!!! But really as long as you keep it low and arent trout fishing in a pond it wont matter.

It will help. Just turn it up when a boat gets near.

Re: radio on boat, yay or ney

Funny and relevant story:

A long time ago, when I was an age that now seems far, far away ... my dad and I decided to go fishing out on the lake one day. My brother wanted to go too, but didn't want to go with us. Dad and I opted to take the smaller boat with the 3HP give my brother the 14' with the 9. Hours later, Dad and I are sitting fishing: DEAD SILENCE. I mention the quiet to him in conjunction with the fact that we've caught NOTHING, and he gives me a 10 minute lecture on being quiet while fishing.

Within - no exaggeration - moments of his finishing his lecture, my brother barrels in with the 9 running with all she has. Kills the OB, heaves the anchor over the side with the Beastie Boyz blaring on his boom box: "You gotta' fight, for your right ..." Within' minutes ... less than 10 - again, no exaggeration - my brother yanks in his first bass. Dad and I ... still nothin'.

So Sheizer, the data seems to suggest that your radio may indeed effect fishing :D

Here is a little something to consider...

I scuba dive.

If you click your fingers underwater, the fish will come to you. No Kidding!
Apparently they think the noise is another fish that found food and want in on the action.
Or, they are just curious. :D

And, curiosity killed the CatFish.

fish love country, rock, alternative, and parrot head music but get downright cranky at rap or anything for that matter that is played so loudly that they have to talk louder on their boat or turn their radio up to hear it over yours.... Oh wait, that's me! LOL

I've caught plenty of fish with a radio playing just play it softly and ur golden.

I have to have a radio playing...not too loud but I like to hear music while I cast endlessly for trout. Like others have said it makes the time go by easier and I really don't think it will matter to the fish. If you have deep bass thumping loudly that would be a little much. Maybe the Andy Griffith song will come on and the fish will jump in your boat!

If you're fishing a small shallow pond or a stream it seems that being quiet is better. On a larger lake trolling with a 60hp 4 stroke running, my radio is on and tuned to country (usually Sirus "The Highway") cuz I'm a country boy at heart. Yep, I even have a supply of red Solo cups on the boat at all times. What you have to be careful of is the guy's without radios that believe that you have to be quiet. They get downright mad. I keep it at a level that I can enjoy and don't force it down the throats of fellow boaters.

Re: radio on boat, yay or ney

im not looking to blast any music, just a little country, weather or ball games for when it gets slow. most lakes i go on arent too big, but it does take me a while to hit some of my spots. so a little music might be nice.
any idea how i could wire a marine radio reciever up? can i put it right to the battery with an inline fuse? i have a fish finder and my motor hooked up to the battery. would there be any worries about draining the battery? my motor charges the battery.

yep hook to the batt. very little issue draining the batt but If you have a pull start on your motor you certainly don't need to worry.

The answer to that question will depend on the type of fish and the normal levels of activity in the are that you fish.

One of the guys in our fishing club is an underwater acoustics expert for the US Navy. He brought in a couple of recordings he made for during his research whch gave me a whole lot of insight on boat noise while fishing.

At 30’ below the surface of the water you could hear the conversation of the people in a boat above like you where standing right next door to them nd you could clearly hear them walking around on the fiberglass deck above. At 40’ below the surface you could still make out what they where saying. You could plainly hear the beat of the drum on the radio onboard over a ? miles away.

Having said that, certain types of fish are more susceptible to noise that others will acclimate to noise over time. Early in the Spring when there has not been any boat traffic around for a while you can watch the big stripers sound and move away from the path of the boat was we troll toward them. Later in the season when the traffic picks up they are a bit more tolerant of the noise but it doesn‘t take much to make them sound. I’ve seen schools of fishing sound more times than I care to remember because someone stopped their drift short and started the motor. I’ve seen a guy drop a can on the deck and watched the fish below scatter on the sounder.

We fish with the radio on a lot of the time. Some days/ locations it doesn’t matter. Other days it’s all quiet on the boat. Just be aware of the fishes behavior around you and act accordingly. Certainly no boom, boom music and nothing loud.

UUHH

Depends on the anount & size of the boats.

Ontario & St Lawrence river. 600' freighters all day long passing each other. Cigarettes WOT. Those fish BITE all the time.

I still eat my food in a noisey sports bar with not much problem.

I thought you meant, "CB radio". The answer to that is Yes, you can then call for pizza on the way in when the other radio scares the fish away

Re: radio on boat, yay or ney

I've discussed this with a couple of charter captains last week that fish the flats (mosquito lagoon) and they said music (not to loud) and talking don't effect the fishing. Slamming hatches and stomping on the deck do.

One has an aluminum boat, the other glass.

Different areas and fish might be different though.
