Yesterday July 23, 2008 we had strong 25 to 30 KTS winds blowing from NNW for about 11 hours, this has driven waves in excess of 8? if measured from the base of the wave. I figured fellow boaters from other areas will appreciate the fury of lake Erie. These pictures were taken from Bay Village Boat Club ramp, it is located about 8 miles west from down town Cleveland in Bay Village, Ohio.

I can't remember what year it was, but the westerly wind was so strong and consistent that it actually blew all the water to the east part of the lake. Many boats at the docks ended up lying in the mud at their docks.

Then I've heard stories about the waves getting so bad, the boats were bottoming out on the lake bottom. I got caught up in some 4' to 6'ers in a 20' deep vee on time. Glad I got everyone back safely that time. Vowed to myself never ever again,,,,,,,,and I haven't................Took too much time to clean up the brown matter in my boat afterwards :D

Just noticed your from Avon,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,not a bad place except that is where my ex lives :D.........You've been warned :D

I recall early winter storms (before the lake froze) when the waves were breaking on to I90 in areas and freezing. I wish I has some pics.

every time i drive by lake erie on i-90 it looks so calm.. i guess since those great lakes are so big that a storm and wind can really kick up the waves... like the edmund fitzgerald song? those must have some really big waves

Need to bookmark this one so the next guy who asks if his 17' bow rider is okay for the lake.

I don't think a 29' cruiser will fair well on a day like that. Having said that, when we get gentle SW breeze, the lake almost glasses over and my 16.5' bow-rider works very well at the very same spot I have taken these pictures at.

Pretty much a typical day in the pacific northwest.

Ya, but don't think the waves would break over the bow either...

And how often is that and how far out do you venture? My understanding is that wind and storms can kick up quick and bring 4' breakers in just a short amount of time. I don't know the lake at all. I can say that I have only seen it from the air. But, there are posters here that ask about CC and bowriders and want to know if they can go from one end of the GL to the other.

And if I had my boat there, I'd go out on nice days. I wasn't trying to say stay off the lake, just that it can get real nasty; more than you might find at smaller lakes. Even my lakes have days that I wouldn't take the boat out because of winds or water condition.

Storms like that do not happen out of the blue, the NOAA forecast called strong NW winds and posted small craft advisory well in advance. With marine radio and checking the radar before leaving you will not have problems in boats of any size.
