Just wanted to send this out to all who may be having the same symptoms as I had. My misfortune might save you a few bucks!!
I have a 2005 Crownline 192br with a carbureted 4.3 but with the engine cover and side jump seats instead of the full bench seat. During most of last summer (2011), I was having trouble with what seemed like water in my gas. Did all of the recommended things (drained gas tank, changed gas/water filter 3 times, added water inhibitor to gas, etc..etc) but still found it hard starting, bogging out, poor acceleration. Funny thing is that a couple of days later, it would be fine ??? Last fall was a real rainy mess here in Atlantic Canada and the boat sat in the driveway for most of Sept and Oct. I went to change the oil for the winter, started it to circulate the oil and "bang..bang.. ka-thwumb". Seized solid. Took out the sparkplugs and lots and lots of water in cylinders 1,3,5 but nothing in 2,4,6. WTH????
When I finally got engine out, intake manifold for 1,3,5, intake ports for 1,3,5 and cylinders 1,3,5 were badly rusted; 2,4,6 were perfect??? Then it hit me. I looked at the sealing washer holding the flame arrester on and it looked fine until it was tightened down, then you could see a hairline crack in the rubber part of the washer. The back of my cockpit cover touches the back part of the engine cover and the carburetor is directly under that!! With days and days of huge amounts of rain, some had run down the cover, hit the back, dribbled down onto the flame arrester and into the carburetor. Looks like it had been going on for some time..
Engine rebuild..$2,500......a new cockpit cover..$450......lots and lots of silicone seal..$50...... back on the water again....PRICELESS.
Enjoy your BOAT (Bring On Another Thousand)
