I just purchased this restored Peterborough Royal boat and Johnson engine. It arrived with the engine locked in the upright position and for the life of me I cannot find the lever to release it. I am 72 years old and remember how easy it was on our boat and motor 55 years ago.

Anyone?
Thanks
Huntly

Look at the stern brackets (that clamp the motor to the motor to the boat). One side has a knob that slides in/out to hold the motor up. The other side has a third clampscrew that screws in to more securely hold it up for trailering. Both need to be released to lower the motor. Nudge the motor up a bit more to make it easier to move the sliding knob.

The sliding one(starboard bracket) was called tilt lock, the clamp screw(port bracket) was refered to as the trailering lock. I have only ever seen a couple of engines that had the clamp screw lock. img673.jpg

The nut just above the "Tilt Lock" (Pictured) above is normally tightened just enough to hold the engine in a temporary tilted position after first releasing the engine from it's normal "Run" (vertical) position by pressing down on the Release/Lock lever pictured in the center of the swivel bracket to release the "Reverse" locking mechanism.

The "Tilt Lock" was a slider, the "Trailering Lock" was a threaded rod, using a clamp screw handle. The trailering lock arrow is pointing is pointing to a clamp screw handle on the port transom bracket, not the reverse lock

Thanks a ton everyone for your help. found the nut to loosen, was able to pull out the release lever, and latch at front of motor to lower. I cannot express my appreciation enough for your kindness in taking the time to help me out. Now I can't wait for summer, I am a fresh water guy and will be cruising, fishing, and tubing with my grandchildren on Lake Cowichan, Vancouver Island. It is a big lake with several boat launches and campgrounds if anyone is visiting Vancouver Island Canada. Cheers Huntly
