Hi Everyone
I'm planning on raising the height of my outboard this week as the cavitation plate is slightly below the keel. Can anyone recomend a sealer for the bolts and if there are any tricks I should know. The motor is a Yamaha F75 and the bottom holes are slotted so I asume that all I would need to do is looosen those and remove the top ones and jack the motor up.Just wondering about the sealant thats all
Any advice would be appreciated
Thanks

3m4200 is what you want to use. And don't be shy with it. Apply it liberaly inside the bolt holes both top and bottom. There should be enough sealer in there that is squeezes out around the washers as you tighten the bolts.

You can also use 3m5200 which provides an even stronger seal. HOWEVER, 3m5200 is very very difficult to remove once cured. If you are thinking you may changes the height on that motor in the future 4200 is your best bet.

Do not ever use general purpose silicone sealers for this purpose. 3m4200 or 5200 only.

Cheers!

Re: Raising Outboard Motor

I've read that some use the trailerv jack to raise and lower the motor.
carefully set the skeg on a block of wood (trailer wheels blocked)loosen or remove bolts as required and adjust the trailer to raise the motor.Watch carefully that the motor moves smoothly.Typically the plate ends up about 1" above the bottom of the boat.Prop selection will allow maximum height.

Raising Outboard Results

Raising Outboard Results

First off Thanks for the advice
Raised the motor up one hole and didn't notice too much difference except the motor seemed to spool up quicker.Still my cavitation plate was under the water, raised up another hole, now as far as I can go.My cavitation plate is now skimming the water and my boat speed remained the same however the spray comming out the sides of my boat is now at least a foot further forward ,the water was rougher when I went back out .So here is my Question...The fact that the spray is further forward would seem to me as if there is more boat in the water creating more drag however the cavitation plate is now an the surface therefore creating less drag. With no noticable gain in raising the motor would it be better to go back down one hole.It may just have been the rougher water though ,can't test again till the weekend.Thoughts anyone?
