Its not mine but I need a upto 90 hp O/B for my 1972 Glastron Futura V153.
I found a guy selling a mid 80's 75 hp mercury O/B with controllers for $200 .
That seems like a good deal to me.
He says it doesnt run since he ran it out of oil.
Says the bottom end is good.
He also says its not seized so thats a good sign.
What am I looking at as far as repair ?
New rings ?

Thanx
Im an auto mechanic and have all the tools at my disposal just looking for some advice.
Seems like a good deal at $200.

Thx

Then you probably surmised that possibly the bottom end is not so good.

It probably got pretty hot. That tends to chew up a lot of things. Could have taken out the power pack too.

I'd do a compression test and then decide. You may be just buying a good lower unit....maybe. That would be questionable too.

If the previous owner let it run out of oil, how did he maintain the rest?

Seller is not in my immediate area . Said he had it checked out at a mercury repair facilty and they said it was going to be $2000 to fix. Asked him for a compression test which he said was done . Waiting for the #'s .

I'm not nearly as knowlegable about boat motors as I am used cars. I am 33 and I've had nearly 40 vehicles. #'s 37,38, and 39 are in the driveway now. I have a rule when buying used cars. "Don't buy junk" Everytime I've tried to buy one in 'not so great shape' with the intention of repairing it, I've gotten burned. Snowfish hit a homer as far as I'm conerned... "If the previous owner let it run out of oil, how did he maintain the rest?" Plus, I've seen MANY engines on CL in running condition, with controls for way less than $2200. I say, RUN, FOREST RUN! lol

I've seen outboard motors partially seize when overheating, get a new waterpump and come back to life. Of course if it's thrown a rod, it's a different matter. I'd let this motor stay with the present owner, and go on my way to finding a good used motor--despite a higher price. The internet is a great place to find marine outboards.

You get what you pay for.

IF< and notice that's in caps, IF you have access to a bore scope, and IF the owner will let you pull the exhaust cover off, MAYBE you can sceak that scope thru the cyl and get a peak at the rods, at least at the piston skirts and cyl walls.

Expect the worst, new rods, new or recon crank, pistons, bore, it can add up.

Thanx for the input. I have a very small budget of around $800 to spend on a motor and controls for my boat . Hence the reason why this one seemed like it may work. Im going to pass as the motor is 140 miles away and I can easily inspect it.
