Ran my engine tonight for about one minute, throttling up and down. Water never pumped.

Some black smoke puffed out and I turned it off. Can I hurt the engine that quick with no water pump, or was that the old pump seal burning up? Thanks forum.

ooops engine is a 81 35hp evinrude 2 stroke

Put it in a barrel and start it up with your hand on the cylinder head to check for overheating. I would think that short of time would not cause any damage. If it overheats you may have damaged the pump impeller, if it runs rough you might want to check the compression.

Give the water pump a service and go again. Should not have caused a problem in one minute.
My 2 cents.

I have to agree with Kenmyfam.

Go through the water pump completely.
Worst case senario is you have to replace the water pump housing and cup along with the impeller.

Tip when you put back together add a little soap to the impeller to make easy to slide at first start.
