I have 83 115 Johnson ran pretty good , in the driveway at home on the muffs was running to test a new tach. the flywheel spun the woodruff key when I shut it down (flywheel kept spinning) got a new key and I cleaned everything under the flywheel looked like it could use it .the next day I can't get it to run without advancing the timing by hand seems to be that the timing is all out of sync and when I lake tested it tries to fire every time I hit it but wont run or even idle could the timing be off with the carb advance or something like that should the carbs open at the same time as the timing advances the guy I got it from had it all messed up some advice as how to set the timing advance in relation to the carbs opening would be helpful

The key shears usually due to not properly torquing the flywheel nut. Lap and clean up the taper and try again using a torque wrench to the proper value. Timing doesnt' change unless someone messed with the linkage or it got loose on it's own [rare]. Running on the muffs doesn't' tell a thing, except the motor will run. Do a search to find Joe Reeves method for setting the timing wo/ running the motor.
