Random High Idle when pulling into neutral

We have a 98 Sea Ray 210br with a merc 5.7efi tbi and it will SOMETIMES high idle at 1000 rpm when pulling it out of gear! Revving up in neutral and pulling back to Neutral doesn't fix it, shutting the engine down and immediately restarting w/o touching anything brings the idle back to normal 600rpm it seems to only happen when docking where we are in and out of gear ...being it doesn't happen all the time we can't seem to pinpoint anything, even though we have tried to jiggle throttle etc. I had the throttle out to look at it and now sometimes when high idle occurs the usual beep when you turn the key on doesn't occur boat starts fine however. If turn key off and back on beep is there and everything starts normal(maybe shifter needs adjustment after having out but everything is back in original position I did adjust the throttle). We have changed the throttle position sensor and all other sensors that we thought might be related and possibly causing this. Only thing I see might be left causing this is the throttle itself, I had it apart and it seems like a lot of play In it to me but nothing to compare it to. I also noticed that the throttle has like a quarter inch of free play when at cruise down the lake? That wouldn't bother me in neutral but I would think that In gear everything should be tight? Only other thing but I don't think it related is every once in a while my tach will bounce like 200 or so rpm, engine speed doesn't change and tach goes back to where it was this only happens at cruise not at low rpm. Have any of you had an issue like this and figured it out? Any ideas if there is something I'm missing? Do you think I'm on the right track with a bad throttle? If so, what are my options to replace a Quicksilver 3000 classic throttle? Sorry for the long post but we have been chasing this issue for 4 years any help would be appreciated.

possible worn/misadjusted throttle cable, worn remote assy, faulty iac motor...or?

no nos replacement for the 3000 series controls, have to go with the gen2 style with new cables

does the engine have a thunderbolt ignition?

No it's not thunderbolt ignition just TBI... So it sounds like I may be on the right track with worn remote assembly... Should the parts inside the remote assemblybassembly able to wiggle or should they be somewhat tight? Also my out drive is GEN 2 not sure if that matters for the remote shifter or not how do I tell by the cables what I have remote shifter has 3000 classic stamped on it...

tbi = throttle body injection, has nothing to do with the ignition system

your engine has either hei/est (module under cap) or thunderbolt (module mounted elsewhere)

alpha gen 2 drive has nothing to do with gen 2 remote control/cables

3000 series does not use gen 2 style cables, there is always a "little" wiggle/play in the remote but the detents for shift should have positive engagement and the arms inside the unit should swing freely

at this point you should check for cable wear/slop by disconnecting at the engine and checking the freeplay at the cable ends, then you can remove, disassemble and inspect the remote control

Not exactly sure what module is under cap would have to check on that one no thunderbolt I'm sure of that, everything inside the remote unit swings freely and it does lock into neutral however it almost seems like there is to much play inside the unit to me, is there a measurement to check the Freeplay at the end of the cables, where would the cable develop Freeplay? I could see stretch never would think a cable would get free play so have looked at that to much yet

i think spec is no more than 9/16" of free play at cable ends

yes, cables wear and get free play. actually quite common on boats

don't think there's any spec on remote "play" they either work or they dont, not a whole lot going on in there just solid swing arms with detents and guides

Was that a typo?

no

but that is from memory, dont have a manual in front of me to verify

at this point it's up to you to determine if you replace just the cable or the whole remote and both cables, but that may not even be the issue causing your problem

I will have to look it up and check that I am also going to look into a new remote shifter/throttle and cables or adapters as I at this point have no idea what else could be causing the issue that i haven't changed other then the engine ECU which I doubt considering I have absolutely no other motor issues, any suggestions on a remote throttle assembly, thanks for the time and information
