1985 carbed 260 mercrmercruiser and alpha 1. New stat and impeller in April. Took the wife out for a quick little run today and noticed engine was losing RPMs. Glanced over at the gauges and noticed temp was almost in the red. Pulled her down to an idle and immediately stalled. Opened hatch and noticed all of the hoses were hot. After about five minutes I restarted the boat and she idled but the temperature gauge stayed where it was. Put Drive in neutral and revved to about 2,000 rpms 2 times and temperatures immediately started to go down and hoses were cool to the touch. Went about our evening Cruise trouble free. Boat also overheated last August and as soon as I pulled it down to an idle she immediately cooled down. Since that day she's been trouble free until today. Stumped.

Have you check the water pocket cover, in the drive, for leaks?

I thought I knew all there was to know but I did not know about this cover or the catastrophe it can cause if melted. Upon research, no I have not checked the water pocket cover but I will in the off-season if this problem doesn't rear it's ugly head...again. In fact, it'll be replaced and tested. Thank you! Also, I will try the clear hose bubble check in the meantime.
