Good morning,

I recently bought a 1989 Ranger 375V with Johnson GT150 and would like some advise on the proper outboard-to-hull setup.

This is what I know:
Prop, 14-1/2 x 24 raker.
4800 rpm @ 54 mph (speedo) with two people and 1/4 tank of fuel.
The GT-150 is mounted straight to the transom as low as it will go.
Distance from bottom of hull to centerline of gear hub is about 7".
Distance from bottom of hull to cavitation plate is about 1-1/2"

I am looking for a set up to do two things.
Fishing by myself and taking the family out to ski. I know. The two extremes.

I guess I need some recommendations on jack plates, engine mounting heights, and prop selection.

Thanks a bunch,
Chris Hollis

Re: Ranger / GT-150 setup advise

Hello duckloads,
I have a similar set up to yours. 89 371V 150 XP Evinrude. My mechanic told me that a jackplate on a ranger boat with anything less than a 200 or 225 is a waste of money. Something about the boat being to heavy, they are built to handle rough water, not speed along! Who knows,I figure he knows more than I, I go fast enough already. I can only turn out 52@5300 rpm. This is just me in the boat with 1/4 tank of gas.... Might be waterlogged.... Good luck and this is just my opinion... People will share more!
Oshi

Re: Ranger / GT-150 setup advise

You didnt mention you top rpm (lets hope its not 4800!!) but that will tell a lot about the set up. The Raker could definately run higher. The 24 is a fairly decent prop so if you are short of your target rpm (5800 - 6000) some increased X dimension should help.

Unless the hull has a lot of hook a jackplate should help. I would call Bob at Bob's Machine in Ruskin, FL since most Rangers nowdays come with his plates anyway. Call him at 800-966-3493. Tell him I said hello.

Good luck!

That's all she'll do. 4700-4800 rpm WOT, WFO, etc.

Duck Loads

Here is a great Ranger owners site where you can get info from owners with the same or similar set-ups.You can also review set-ups in the owners lists.I believe a 6 inch setback is fairly common on that size Ranger with the motor lifted about 2 inches off the transom..
http://pub186.ezboard.com/fbbcboardfrm24
