Rattle sound above 3/4 throttle

Hello,

My '88 30HP Johnson short shaft outboard is making a rattling sound only when I go above 3/4 throttle. I've noticed this on the first run out this season. The motor was stored outside this winter. It's a definite metal on metal sound.

I'm hoping for some suggestions on what I could look for. I'm not much of a mechanic, so my faint hope is that it is a fuel mixture problem. Failing that, perhaps I need some gear oil? I'm just guessing...

If it could be something moderatly easy to fix, I'll tackle it myself. Else it in to the shop I guess.

Thanks in advance

electric or pull start. if pull start, could be tines on the starter hitting the flywheel. setting outdoors they could be goopped up, and not retracting all the way.

sounds stupid but my 89 40hp evinrude started making a sound and it was the plate on the cover that had the 40 on it.

Re: Rattle sound above 3/4 throttle

Thanks for the suggestions guys. It's an electric start. I tried having a look with the cover off at idle, but the engine seems perfectly fine less then 3/4.

I'll keep trying to find out exactly where the sound is coming from.

Regards...

to rule out the cover i guess you could remove cover and run it up to the rpm where it makes noise (on the water of course)
