hello i have a 50hp four str four cyl merc when it shifts in F it is fine but when put back to N the lower end rattles almost like something is loose but cant find the problem. also it does this in R. i disassembled the lower unit but everything looked ok. also does the shifter have to be in gear to put the lower unit back on i took it off in N (might have been a mistake but its a learning process)

Cam;

What is the serial number of your engine. If it is a later s/n, we may be able to get you the service manual online.

As for the re-installation of the lower unit it calls for the boat controls and the LU to both be in neutral

This is usually caused by prop not being torqued to spec's, the flo-torq and rubex replaceable hub props are bad about this. Tighten to 55ft/lbs UNLESS you have the FloTorq II with a bushing in the front in which case they spec 100ft/lbs....

sry,its the cable from the control lever to shift rod that goes down to lower unit.......with the engine running you can test this by pulling shift lever a little past netural toward reverse to see if the rattle stops.........if that stops the noise the cable needs to be adjusted out to make a little longer
